Auto Fact or Fiction: Do Heavy Keys Damage Your Ignition?
If you have heavy keys, you’ve probably had someone nag you about them. “Heavy keys damage your ignition!” they cry. But is this really true? We’re here to clear it up.
This has some roots in fact, but it’s been way overblown. It’s true that a very heavy keychain can pull down on the tumblers in the ignition, which means they won’t wear evenly, and your key won’t be able to turn it anymore.
In short: Yes, too many keys can damage your ignition, but it needs to be a lot of keys. Jalopnik says three pounds is frequently quoted as the weight limit of ignitions, and you probably don’t have three pounds of keys on your keyring. Car Talk says to limit it to nine keys, which is still plenty of room for your keychains.
Still, to be on the safe side, it’s a good idea to separate your car key from the rest of your keys and just put your car key in the ignition. Better safe than sorry!
