2017 Kia Niro Hybrid Wowed the Crowd at the Chicago Auto Show
In February, the all-new 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show, along with two other hybrid and PHEV vehicles, the new Optima Hybrid and the Optima PHEV. The Niro is what Nissan is calling a hybrid utility vehicle and is estimated to yield a max of 50 mpg combined.
Kia has designed the new Niro on a platform called the eco-car platform and introduced it along with the Optima EVs under the new Kia Motors EcoDynamics sub-brand. The Niro’s all-new eco-car platform is another step toward Kia’s goal of tripling its eco-friendly lineup in the next four years.
Orth Hedrick, the vice president of product planning at Kia Motors America, says the Niro hits a “sweet spot” in that it has all the benefits of a hybrid and SUV—exceptional fuel economy, smooth ride, and utility—with style that doesn’t peg it as a hybrid. The sleek Niro fits in easily with the rest of the SUV segment.
Kia plans to eventually add a plug-in hybrid version of the Niro to its lineup. Here at Crown Motor Company, we can’t wait to see the Niro in person!
