Kia Debuts New FWD Eight-Speed Transmission
FWD Eight-Speed Transmission
Kia recently announced the debut of a new eight-speed transmission developed for its front-wheel drive vehicles. The automaker already has had experience developing eight-speeds for rear-wheel drive cars. However, FWD vehicles have their own set of mechanical challenges.
The new FWD eight-speed transmission will debut with the release of the 2017 Kia Cadenza, paired with the model’s 3.3-liter V6 GDI engine. However, Kia says the new transmission will make its way into a number of vehicles in the lineup.
The eight-speed transmission for FWD vehicles has reportedly been in development since 2012. And in the end Kia patented a total of 143 new technologies that went into making sure the new powertrain option excels in the categories of both performance and efficiency. Kia developers also wanted to ensure the transmission was as compact as possible for a more lightweight, streamlined design.
Notable features on the FWD eight-speed transmission include a smaller oil pump and a more simplified valve body structure, which allows for better fuel economy by distributing the oil evenly and efficiently. There are also 12 valves as opposed to 20, which improves the speed of gear shifting for smoother performance.
The Kia Cadenza with the new transmission is expected to go on sale globally by the end of the year.
